THERE ARE A WIDE VARIETY OF OPTIONS IN DENTAL CARE TO PREVENT EARLY CHILDHOOD TOOTH DECAY TO GIVE CHILDREN THE BEST CHANCE AT A HEALTHY SMILE FOR LIFE.
By most accounts, every child fears a visit to the dentist; however, Dr. Karim Kanani and Dr. Diya Chadha of Burnaby’s SmileTown Dentistry work to minimize that expected trepidation and are committed daily to mitigate children’s anxiety with their family-friendly practice.
“The most important thing about a healthy smile is to have the ability to go to the dentist without fear,” says Dr. Chadha. “A reason adults don’t go to the dentist is that they’ve had a negative experience as a child, so the ability to initially form a positive experience is important. They’ll be lifelong, happy, cooperative patients as adults.”
Dr. Kanani has a certificate in pediatric dentistry and is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, while Dr. Chadha is a certified specialist in pediatric dentistry. Both doctors hold a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree and embody a passion for working with children to provide the best possible treatment and dental experience for every child.
SmileTown Dentistry is designed with a fun and engaging environment that caters to the unique needs of children of all ages, from babies to teenagers, including children with special needs. Every office is wheelchair accessible and staff utilize a variety of techniques to assist special-needs dental patients.
“Our philosophy is that everyone deserves compassionate care; we want children to enjoy coming to the dentist. It’s a humbling experience to have an opportunity to work with children and get that smile or high-five at the end of the appointment.” Dr. Karim Kanani, SmileTown Dentistry.
Growing up with a brother with special needs, Dr. Chadha knows first-hand the difficulties families and patients with disabilities endure who require access to dental care.
“I knew how challenging it was to get my brother into appointments and my parents experienced an equal amount of stress,” explains Dr. Chadha. “I wanted to help other families; that’s why we decided to open offices that are fun for children of all ages and specially designed to accommodate families with special-needs children.” Dr. Kanani adds, “We are here to help, and we are empathetic to their needs.”
With a comprehensive range of high-quality children-centred dental services, SmileTown Dentistry offers a variety of care and treatment options including interceptive orthodontics, nitrous oxide, sedation dentistry and general anesthesia.
Each SmileTown office has a different kid-friendly theme. Burnaby’s is a jungle, including animated animal characters, colourful murals, and a special jungle theatre. Additional offices expected to open soon are North Delta/Surrey, to include a beach theme, and Langley, an underwater theme.
In addition to providing professional dental care, SmileTown is committed to community involvement and education. The doctors hold presentations at local schools and daycare centres about the importance of good oral health.
“Our goal is to provide the best dental care possible for our young patients,” says Dr. Kanani.
